Excision of xanthelasma
Xanthelasma treatment involves a little operation to remove the skin with the fatty deposit.
Summary
Xanthelasma excision is a relatively quick procedure (depending on the extent of the fatty deposits) that is carried out under local anaesthetic. The operation is carried out in a full operating theatre. The extent of the xanthelasma is marked and excised. The wound is then closed with fine stitches which will dissolve.
The Process
The procedure will be explained by your consultant and you will be asked to sign a consent form. Surgery will be carried out in the operating theatre.
An anaesthetic drop will numb the surface of the eye. The eyelid will be cleaned and the extent of the xanthelasma marked. The lid is then then injected with local anaesthetic.
The xanthelasma is excised and any bleeding blood vessels cauterised. The wound is closed using dissolvable stitches.
Antibiotic cream is applied and the eyelid is covered with a dressing which should stay in place for 4 hours. You will be given instructions and an antibiotic ointment to take home. The eyelid will have some bruising and swelling and will take up to a week or two to settle.
