Possible treatments for dry eyes include medical treatments, BlepEx™ and OptiLightTM IPL treatments.
Generally, patients with dry eyes are initially treated with prescription eye drops to increase lubrication. Sometimes they also require systemic or topical antibiotics.
Blepharitis is a common inflammatory condition of the eyelids associated with skin flakes and blockage of the meibomian (oil gland) openings. This impairs the tear film resulting in dry eyes. BlephEx treatment uses a soft spinning sponge to micro-exfoliate to help settle the blepharitis.
Eyelid inflammation, specifically leading to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and dry eyes, can be successfully treated with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). This improves the tear film, reduces dry eye symptoms and reduces reliance on regular eye drops.
OptiLight™ IPL uses patented Lumenis Optimal Pulse Technology and is a precise light therapy. Although relatively new to the UK it has a history going back over more than 30 years. It does not use laser and has very low risk. It uses intense pulses of visible light to treat specific skin conditions, including meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and rosacea. Treatment results is a sustained improvement in most patients with dry eyes associated with MGD.
As part of your dry eye assessment your consultant surgeon will determine whether you are suitable for OptiLight™ IPL treatment.
Your consultant will generally recommend an initial course of 4 painless treatment sessions, spaced 2-3 weeks apart, for optimal effects in treating MGD and dry eye. Over the course of treatments you should experience a gradual improvement in your symptoms. Regular six-monthly assessments with a top-up treatment will help to control symptoms for the long-term. Each treatment is cumulative in effect.
The IPL treatment decreases high tear concentration (osmolarity), treats inflamed blood vessels, significantly reduces inflammatory mediators and restores meibomian gland function. The net result of this is that your eyes should feel cleaner, more comfortable and moist, with less inflamed eyelids and reduced need for eyedrops.
Newcastle Dry Eye Clinic, based at My Eye Clinic, is the only medical facility in the North East offering OptiLight™ IPL for the treatment of dry eyes and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Only a few clinics outside of London can offer this latest FDA-approved treatment.
My Eye Clinic can provide expert corneal consultant assessment of dry eyes.
Newcastle Dry Eye Clinic has a full range of diagnostic equipment for dry eyes. Specifically, these tests include non-invasive tear break-up time assessment, TearLab® tear osmolarity testing, corneal topography, infrared imaging of the meibomian glands and testing of tear production.
My Eye Clinic offers BlepEx™ treatment of blepharitis which causes meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye.
