Find answers to your most pressing questions about cataract surgery and learn how it can restore your vision and improve your quality of life

You don’t have to wait for cataracts to get “bad enough” for surgery. The right time is when you start noticing changes in your vision, have discussed the pros and cons with your eye doctor, and feel comfortable moving forward.

Everyone experiences cataracts differently. What might not bother one person could be a big issue for someone else. That’s why it’s important to have a conversation with an experienced surgeon to decide when surgery is best for you.

If you’re active and want clear vision at all distances without needing glasses all the time, premium cataract surgery might be a great option. It can offer more freedom compared to standard cataract surgery.

To know if it’s right for you, we’ll need to check your eyes during your first visit. This helps us recommend the best surgery to fit your vision and lifestyle needs.

Cataract surgery is all about replacing the cloudy lens in your eye with a clear, artificial lens.

There are two main types of cataract surgery: standard and premium.
In standard cataract surgery, we remove the cloudy lens and put in a new one called a monofocal lens. This lens helps you see clearly at one distance—either far away or up close—but not both. So, you’ll still need glasses for some things, like reading or seeing far-off objects.

Premium cataract surgery is a bit more advanced. We replace the cloudy lens with a premium lens. This lens lets you see clearly at all distances—near, far, and in between. It’s a good choice if you want to rely less on glasses.

Both types have their benefits, and we can help you choose the one that best fits your lifestyle and vision needs.

Advantages:

  • Over 90% of people see things far away really clearly (as good as or better than 20/25 vision) without needing glasses.
  • Premium cataract surgery has a lot of satisfied patients, with very few experiencing any problems.
  • The surgery is quick—usually under 30 minutes—and you can go home the same day.
  • Many people notice better vision as soon as the next day.
  • Recovery is generally fast and smooth.
  • The new lens we put in lasts for life, so you won’t need to replace it.

Disadvantages:

  • Compared to standard cataract surgery, it might take a little longer to fully adjust to your new vision after premium cataract surgery. It could take some time for your vision to settle down and become stable.

It’s all about what works best for your life and your vision goals, and we’re here to help you make the right choice

Let’s go over the possible risks of cataract surgery, focusing on those related to multifocal or toric lenses.

Cataract Surgery Risks:

  • Infection: Like any surgery, there’s a small chance of infection, but we take careful steps to keep that risk low.
  • Pressure Changes: The pressure in your eye could go up or down, and we’ll keep an eye on it.
  • Vision Issues: Rarely, people may experience blurriness, glare, or a drop in vision. If anything seems off, let us know right away.
  • Loss of vision: The risk of the eyesight being worse in the operated eye is about 1 in 100 and of a serious complication leading to severe loss of vision (such as infection) is about 1 in 1000.

Risks with premium cataract surgery:

  • Adjustment time: Multifocal lenses may take a little time to get used to. Your brain has to learn how to focus at different distances.
  • Night vision glare: Some people see rings or glare around lights at night.
  • Imperfect focus: Multifocal lenses aim to give clear vision at all distances, but sometimes you may still need glasses for certain tasks.
  • Lens position: Toric lenses, which correct astigmatism (blurry vision), need to stay in the right position in the eye. If they move, your vision may not be as clear and might need an adjustment.

While these risks can sound a bit scary, remember that cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful surgeries. These special lenses can make a big difference in how you see after surgery, and we’ll guide you every step of the way to make sure you feel comfortable and informed.

The choice is simple: either you have cataract surgery or you don’t. There’s no other way to get rid of cataracts. If you skip surgery, your cataracts will stay, and over time, your vision will keep getting worse, making things look blurry and colours less bright.

When it comes to surgery, you have two main options:

  • Standard cataract surgery: In this basic option, we remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a new one called a monofocal lens. This lens helps you see clearly at one distance, like far away. However, you’ll still need glasses for things like reading or using a computer.
  • Premium cataract surgery: This is the more advanced option. We remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a multifocal lens. This special lens helps you see clearly at different distances—near, far, and in-between—so you may not need glasses as much.

Both options have their benefits, and we’ll help you decide which one fits your lifestyle and vision needs best.

Step 1: First, we’ll put drops in your eye to numb it, and we’ll give you something mild to help you relax. Then, we make a tiny cut in the clear part of your eye (called the cornea).

Step 2: Through that small cut, we insert a thin tool that uses gentle sound waves to break up the cloudy lens into tiny pieces. We carefully remove the pieces, using a special microscope to make sure everything is gone.

Step 3: Next, we roll up a new lens and slide it into the spot where your old lens was. The new lens fits perfectly in place, and the small cut seals itself—no stitches needed.

Step 4: After surgery, we’ll put a clear shield over your eye to protect it for the first few hours. You’ll start using eye drops to prevent infection and reduce swelling. The surgery itself is quick, usually done in less than an hour, but plan to be at the hospital for about three hours total.

These steps are designed to keep you comfortable and make your path to clearer vision as easy as possible.

Patients often experience improved vision and a reduced need for glasses post-surgery, although there are risks, including infection and retinal detachment. Click here to read more.

Refractive error can occur after cataract surgery, often due to inaccurate preoperative measurements or unexpected healing responses. Common types include myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, which can lead to blurry vision. Management options include glasses, contact lenses, or additional surgical interventions like laser vision correction. Proper patient assessment and communication are crucial for optimal outcomes.
