OptiLight IPL treatment of Dry Eyes and MGD
Eyelid inflammation, leading to meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eyes, can be settled with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) dry eye treatment. This improves the tear film and reduces dry eye symptoms.
Summary
OptiLight IPL uses patented Lumenis Optimal Pulse Technology and is a precise new light therapy. It does not use laser and consequently has very low risk. It uses specific light filters with specific wavelengths to treat specific skin conditions, including meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and rosacea. OptiLight IPL is specifically the only system with full FDA-approval for the treatment of dry eyes with pulsed light.
The Process
Your consultant surgeon during your dry eye assessment will determine whether you are suitable for OptiLight IPL treatment. Your dry eyes can sometimes be associated with a lid condition called blepharitis (like dandruff of eyelashes). The consultant can treat this condition with exfoliation of the lid margin with a rotating soft sponge, called BlephEx.
Patients usually require an initial course of 4 treatments, spaced 2-3 weeks apart, for optimal results in treating MGD and dry eyes. You may require intermittent treatments if your symptoms worsen, or at 6 monthly intervals. Each treatment is cumulative in effect.
The IPL treatment significantly decreases high tear concentration (osmolarity), treats inflamed blood vessels, reduces inflammatory mediators and restores meibomian gland function. The net result of this is that many patients regain comfortable, clearer, brighter, more moist eyes without puffy red thickened eyelids.
