Presbyopia is caused by aging changes in the eye’s natural crystalline lens. A young lens is flexible and its power can be adjusted by muscles to focus over a range of distances. This process, called accommodation, becomes more difficult with age as the lens becomes stiffer.
Presbyopia symptoms include:
Needing to hold reading material further away in order to be able to read clearly
Eye strain or headaches when reading for a prolonged period
Deterioration in near vision is usually first noticed in the winter months when lighting is worse.
