Entropion is an eye condition caused by the loss of elasticity in muscles around the eye and laxity of eyelid. It results in the muscles of the eyelid overlapping and the eyelashes turning inwards towards the eyeball, causing pain and discomfort, and possible damage to the cornea (transparent front surface of the eye). It usually affects the lower eyelid, although occasionally it can affect the upper lid.
Other causes:
Eyelid trauma or surgery
Conjunctival scarring
Excessive eyelid rubbing causing eyelid laxity
Infection (worldwide Trachoma is a common cause of entropion in developing countries)
Entropion can, rarely, be present from birth
There are some temporary measures that can make the eye more comfortable while you are awaiting surgical correction.
Surgical tape can be attached just below the lashes to pull down the lower lid, back into a normal position, giving some temporary relief of symptoms.
Lubricating drops, gel or ointment can help keep the eye comfortable.
Correction of entropion really requires surgery.
