Surgery To Remove Eyelid Cysts (Chalazion)
Chalazion treatment involves a little operation called Incision & Curettage (I+C) which drains the cyst and allows the eye to settle.
Summary
I+C of a chalazion is a relatively quick procedure (approx 10 minutes) that is carried out under local anaesthetic. The contents of the cyst are drained, allowing the eyelid lump to resolve.
The Process
The procedure will be explained by your consultant and you will be asked to sign a consent form. Surgery will be carried out in the operating theatre suite.
An anaesthetic drop will numb the surface of the eye. The eyelid will be cleaned and then injected with local anaesthetic.
A small clamp is placed over the cyst and the eyelid everted to show the cyst from the inside.
A small incision is made to allow the contents of the cyst to be removed.
Antibiotic cream is applied and the eyelid is covered with a dressing which should stay in place for 4 hours. You will be given instructions and an antibiotic ointment to take home. The eyelid will have some bruising and swelling and will take a week or two to settle.
