Is laser eye surgery painful?

Let’s be honest—one of the biggest concerns people have about laser eye surgery is the pain.

So let’s get straight to the point:
The procedure itself doesn’t hurt.

During the procedure

We use special numbing drops to keep your eyes completely pain-free. You might feel a little pressure, but most people say the procedure feels “strange” rather than painful.

You’re awake, but the laser only takes a minute or two per eye. You won't see the laser or feel any heat. Most people say the whole thing is over much faster than they expected.

What does each type feel like?

  • LASIK: A bit of pressure for a few seconds. Some scratchiness or tearing after, which settles quickly.
  • LASEK/TransPRK: More surface sensitivity. You may feel gritty, watery, or sore eyes for a few days.

Discomfort with surface treatments is common in the first 24 to 72 hours, but it's manageable. We'll give you everything you need to stay comfortable.

We help you manage discomfort

After surgery, we give you:

  • Eye drops to reduce inflammation and dryness
  • Pain relief if needed
  • A bandage contact lens (for LASEK/TransPRK)

You’ll also get a full recovery pack, instructions, and access to our team if you have questions or need support. Most people feel much better after the first few days.

What do patients say?

Many patients compare the feeling to having an eyelash in your eye for a short while—slightly annoying, but not painful.

Within a week, most patients are back to their normal routines, and discomfort is a distant memory.

Tips for a more comfortable recovery

  • Rest your eyes after the procedure
  • Wear sunglasses to reduce light sensitivity
  • Use your drops as instructed
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes
  • Keep screens to a minimum for the first day or two

Everyone heals a little differently, but our team will guide you every step of the way.
