Does laser eye surgery hurt?

Let’s be honest. If you’re considering laser eye surgery, you’re probably wondering: Will it hurt?

It’s one of the most common questions we hear—and one of the easiest to answer.

No, laser eye surgery shouldn’t hurt. But let’s walk through the whole process so you know what to expect.

What does laser eye surgery feel like?

At My Eye Clinic in Gosforth, we offer:

Each one is slightly different. But all three use numbing drops to make sure your eyes are comfortable during the procedure.

During the procedure:
You might feel a little pressure, but not pain. Most people say it feels “weird” rather than uncomfortable.

LASIK involves a flap, which can cause a brief feeling of pressure. LASEK and TransPRK work on the surface and may take a little longer to heal—but again, no pain during the laser itself.

What about after the procedure?

Here’s what most people experience:

  • LASIK: Some mild stinging, scratchiness, or watering for a few hours after treatment. It usually settles quickly.
  • LASEK and TransPRK: More discomfort for the first few days—like grit or sand in the eye. We give you drops, pain relief, and protective lenses to help.

The surface-based options (LASEK and TransPRK) tend to have a longer recovery time, but that doesn’t mean they’re worse—just different. For some people, they’re the safer choice based on their eye shape or lifestyle.

Is there anything you can do to make it easier?

Yes. We’ll give you everything you need:

  • Numbing drops before the procedure
  • Eye drops and pain relief afterwards
  • Clear instructions on how to care for your eyes

We’ll also talk you through everything before the day, so you know what to expect.

You’re not alone

If you’re reading this and still unsure, that’s okay. You don’t need to decide today.

Start with a quick self-test. It can tell you if LASIK, LASEK, or TransPRK might be right for you—and help you move forward with confidence.

Take the suitability self-test. It’s quick, free, and a great way to start.
