Am I suitable for laser eye surgery?
You want to get rid of glasses and contact lenses. You’ve heard great things about laser eye surgery. But there’s one question you need answered first: "Am I actually suitable?"
That’s what we’re here to help with.
In this blog, we’ll cover:
- Who laser eye surgery is right for
- What could make someone unsuitable
- How we check suitability
- What your options are if you’re not a candidate
Who is laser eye surgery suitable for?
You might be suitable if:
- You’re over 18
- Your glasses or contact lens prescription has been stable for at least 12 months
- You have healthy eyes with no major issues (like cataracts or advanced dry eye)
- You want freedom from glasses or contacts
We assess your individual case in detail—it’s not one-size-fits-all.
What could make me unsuitable?
There are a few things that might mean laser eye surgery isn’t right for you:
- Unstable prescription
- Thin or irregular corneas
- Certain eye conditions like keratoconus, glaucoma, or severe dry eye
- Autoimmune diseases or conditions that affect healing
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (vision can change temporarily)
Even if you’re not suitable for LASIK, you might still be a candidate for LASEK or TransPRK.
What does the suitability assessment involve?
We take a deep dive into your eyes:
- Scan your cornea in 3D
- Measure your prescription with high precision
- Assess your eye pressure and tear film
- Review your lifestyle, work, and visual goals
It’s painless, thorough, and all about making the safest recommendation for you.
What happens if I’m not suitable?
We’ll explain why—and what your other options might be.
Some people are better suited for:
- Lens replacement surgery (especially over 50s)
- Implantable contact lenses (ICLs)
- Continuing with glasses or contacts for now
You’ll never be pushed. You’ll only be offered what’s safe and effective.
