Are you awake for laser eye surgery?
If you’re thinking about laser eye surgery, it’s normal to feel a little nervous. One of the most common questions we hear is: "Am I awake during the procedure?"
The answer is yes—you are awake, but you are also very comfortable and relaxed. It’s not as scary as it sounds, and most people say it was far easier than they expected.
In this blog, we’ll explain:
- Why you stay awake during laser eye surgery
- What you’ll feel (and what you won’t)
- How we keep you calm and comfortable
- What happens from start to finish.
Why are you awake?
Laser eye surgery is a very quick and gentle procedure. There’s no need for general anaesthetic (which puts you to sleep). In fact, it’s safer and more effective to do the treatment while you’re awake.
We need you to look in a certain direction during the procedure—the laser tracks your eye, but your cooperation helps. Plus, recovery is easier when you're not dealing with anaesthesia.
Will it hurt?
No. Before the procedure, we use numbing eye drops so you won’t feel pain.
You might feel:
- A bit of pressure for a few seconds
- A strange sensation as the laser works
- Mild irritation or watering after the procedure
But most people say it’s quick, painless, and over before they know it.
Will I see what’s happening?
You won’t see the laser itself or any instruments coming towards your eye.
Your vision during the procedure will be blurry or shadowy. You may notice lights or slight movement, but not in a way that feels uncomfortable or alarming.
We talk you through everything as it happens so you know what to expect.
How do you keep me calm?
Feeling nervous is completely normal. To help you relax:
- We explain everything beforehand
- You can ask questions any time
- We offer a mild sedative if needed
- A nurse or assistant will be right by your side throughout.
You don’t have to be brave. Just being here means you're ready to take a step toward clearer vision.
Step-by-step: what happens during the procedure
- You’ll lie down comfortably in the laser suite
- We apply numbing drops to your eyes
- A small instrument keeps your eye gently open
- You’ll be asked to look at a light—just follow it
- The laser works for less than a minute per eye
- We talk you through it the whole time
- You’ll rest in recovery before going home.
That’s it. The whole thing is over in minutes.
How soon will I see clearly?
- LASIK: Many people notice improved vision within hours
- LASEK/TransPRK: Takes a few days, but results are just as good
You’ll use drops, rest your eyes, and come for follow-ups to make sure everything is healing well.
Still feeling unsure? That’s completely normal.
