What to avoid after laser eye surgery?

Laser eye surgery can give you clear vision fast. But for the best results, it’s important to follow the aftercare advice.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through:

  • What not to do after LASIK, LASEK or TransPRK
  • Why these things matter
  • How to help your eyes heal faster and stay healthy

The first 24–48 hours: Take it easy

Right after surgery, your eyes are healing. Here’s what to avoid:

  • Rubbing your eyes: Even if they feel itchy, don’t touch them. Rubbing can dislodge healing tissue
  • Screens and bright lights: Rest your eyes. Dim the lights. Keep screen time to a minimum
  • Driving: You won’t be insured to drive immediately after surgery. Wait until we confirm your vision is safe.

What to avoid in the first week

  • Makeup: No eye makeup for at least a week. It can carry bacteria and irritate your eyes
  • Swimming or hot tubs: Avoid pools and spas to reduce the risk of infection
  • Dusty or smoky environments: These can irritate your healing eyes
  • Contact sports: No risk of knocks or pressure on your eyes while they heal.

Even walking outside in windy weather can make your eyes dry—wear sunglasses and stay hydrated.

Things to avoid for a few weeks

  • Fake eyelashes or extensions
  • Sunbeds or tanning
  • Using old makeup brushes or sponges near your face
  • Skipping follow-up appointments.

Let your body do its job. The better you care for your eyes now, the better your long-term results will be.

Do I need to avoid screens entirely?

Not forever. But for the first day or two, try to:

  • Rest your eyes often
  • Use eye drops as prescribed
  • Take regular breaks when working or reading.

Dryness is common after laser eye surgery, especially if you’re using screens a lot. Lubricating drops and screen breaks will help.

What helps speed up recovery?

  • Follow all aftercare instructions
  • Use your drops consistently
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors
  • Get plenty of sleep.

Your eyes deserve the best chance to heal

Laser eye surgery is safe and effective. But the healing period is just as important as the surgery itself. Give your eyes the rest and protection they need, and they’ll thank you with clear, comfortable vision.
